Xterra Worlds by Phil Glenn

Another epic journey and challenge with World’s this year.  Rain early last week made for nice & tacky trail conds.  As always, the north island sun was hot and intense w/ minimal wind to provide any relief.   With more racers every year, the swim seemed aggressive through the first buoy. My plan on the bike never changed and i was very patient the first several miles.  There was a “Legends” category this year which included past xterra racers/champions.  I was honored to spend a little time riding and speaking w/ Michael Tobin. I remember him dominating Xterra pre-Contad Stolz days.  He had the cover of Triathlete Magazine in 2000 which inspired me to get into doing Xterra’s.
Did my best to pace myself on the bike and was happy to see David catch me early looking very strong enroute to a 6th place finish and a faster time than last year he told me.  No easy way around that bike course and started dreading the run by mile 12 of the bike😄
Kept my wits and was able turn my legs over one by one closer to that finish line.  I’ve been telling myself for 3 years that “this is my last year.” Feels great to have 10 Xterra World Champ races under my belt since 04′.  Maybe next year i’ll come back to suffer another.  So glad to represent Sierra Endurance Sports and all of our wonderful and supportive sponsers.
